Instead of a typical backyard, the resulting garden becomes the epicenter of the house allowing a seamless indoor-outdoor transition with the public areas on the lower level. The upper level contains the master bedroom, two secondary bedrooms and a family room with views of the courtyard and framed views of the exterior landscape. The intersection of the two main volumes is pierced vertically by a void that works simultaneously as a light well and an enclosed staircase that connects with the garage located at street level. a successful entrepreneur to renovate his 5000sf residence located in West Hollywood Hills. Due to the new Baseline Hillside Ordinance a feasibility study was necessary before the architectural and interior design work began. Being an entertainment house for a bachelor an emphasis was put on the public spaces, the bold finishes and the furniture selection. The existing building lacked a proper connection between the 4 stories and to the rear yard at the bottom so several options were explored to open up the space and bring more light whilst directing the views to the LA basin. The re-designed pool area features an infinity pool connected to a spa and a sunbathing / sitting area that takes advantage of the different elevations and views. developer/designer Marc Canadell in order to prepare a feasibility study and conceptual proposals to renovate an existing house from the 50's. Over the course of three years SMD secured building permits and provided architectural work for the several iterations, the pool and deck areas and assisted on the interior design of this house that totals 8, 500 sf comprising 5 bedrooms, 8 baths, public areas, separate studio and a 3 car garage.
